Artificial Intelligence and Equality Law in the Public Sector
Artificial intelligence (AI) is gaining visibility across the public sector and we are seeing a range of initiatives that seek to guide its use. On the one hand, AI presents potential benefits, supporting consistent decision-making and building efficiency. On the other hand, AI systems may lead to discrimination and deepen inequalities.
Public bodies need to consider equality from the start when thinking about whether to use AI. The public sector equality duty applies to any AI systems that public bodies are already using or that others may be developing or using on their behalf. Last year, the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) published guidance on AI in public services.
We are delighted to be hosting a virtual event on Wednesday 27th September, 2pm - 3:30pm with EHRC’s Compliance team in Scotland.
This event is open to members of the Digital Partnership, and will provide an overview of the application of equality law to AI in public services and how to address barriers to embedding equality considerations in AI projects.
